The Surroundings

The lakes

Of course, Lake Grimnitz and Lake Werbellin offer ideal conditions for swimming, fishing, rowing, hiking, and cycling. But there is so much more to experience in our surroundings.

Joachimsthal and Althüttendorf

In addition to the charming small town of Joachimsthal, affectionately called "Juchtebündel" by its residents, the quaint village of Althüttendorf, with its rustic rural charm, also invites visitors to explore.

Biorama-Project

Right next door, you can enjoy a first-class panoramic view of the Biosphere Reserve from the observation platform of the Biorama Project. On clear days, you can see as far as the Cedynia Landscape Park in Poland, where white-tailed eagles and black storks nest, or even spot the Berlin TV Tower.

Geopark Ice Age Land on the Oder Edge
In Joachimsthal, you’ll also find the Geopark Ice Age Land on the Oder Edge. Here, you can learn all about the glacial origins of the region and what can be done to preserve it.

Wildpark Schorfheide
Not far away lies the Wildpark Schorfheide. Its seven kilometers of hiking trails with rest and picnic areas offer an educational and relaxing experience in nature, whether on foot, by carriage, or by bicycle. The spacious enclosures are home to large wild animals and very rare, ancient domestic breeds that are threatened with extinction.

The Wildpark Schorfheide is particularly appealing to families with children. A large playground and a petting zoo are ready to be explored. The visitor center and village area, complete with a field oven and campfire site, provide space to relax and enjoy meals. As a barrier-free facility, most animal enclosures are accessible to wheelchair users.

Hiking Tours in the Biosphere Reserve
There are numerous hiking tours available, such as the Wolletzsee Circular Hike and the hike from the Grumsin BeechForest Info Point to the UNESCO World Heritage Beech Forest Grumsin.

Chorin Monastery
The stunning former Gothic Cistercian abbey was founded in 1258. In 2017, a permanent exhibition on the life and work of the monks at Chorin Monastery was opened. Another section showcases the rediscovery of the monastery and the preservation efforts by Karl Friedrich Schinkel.

Niederfinow Boat Lift
Germany’s oldest operational boat lift, located at the eastern end of the Oder-Havel Canal in Niederfinow, is an impressive structure capable of lifting ships up to 36 meters in height. In 2007, it was recognized as a “Historic Landmark of Civil Engineering in Germany.” The boat lift is open to the public for tours and visits.

Nature and landscape

Nature

The Natura Holiday Park is located in the heart of the stunning UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Schorfheide-Chorin. This area features vast forests, lakes, and moors, as well as expansive pine forests and ancient pasture oaks in the Schorfheide. The reserve is also home to large, undisturbed lowland beech forests. In 2011, the Grumsin Beech Forest was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Animals

The region is home to typical large wildlife such as red deer, wild boar, and roe deer, as well as frequent sightings of beavers and otters. Remarkably, the critically endangered European pond turtle and the fire-bellied toad still maintain populations here. Additionally, white-tailed eagles, ospreys, tawny eagles, cranes, and black storks breed in the surrounding forests. In total, over 200 bird species call this area home. Lake Grimnitz is rich in fish species, including eel, perch, bream, pike, crucian carp, carp, roach, rudd, tench, and bleak.
